Today, Good Energy Collective released the following statement from Deputy Director Jackie Toth celebrating the Senate's confirmation of Dr. Kathryn Huff to be Assistant Secretary of Energy for Nuclear Energy:
“We’re so glad the Senate has confirmed Dr. Kathryn Huff to lead the Office of Nuclear Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy. It’s wonderful the chamber took this vote so quickly after her nomination was unanimously reported favorably to the Senate last week.
“As former principal deputy assistant secretary for the nuclear office and as a senior advisor in the Office of the Secretary, Dr. Huff has demonstrated that she is highly capable of thoughtfully advancing the government’s nuclear energy portfolio. We’ve been particularly impressed with her commitment to advancing federal interim storage and disposal solutions for nuclear waste through a consent-based process that will identify communities with a broad and deep participatory interest. She has also overseen the integration of environmental justice considerations into the nuclear office’s other programs and activities.
“Nuclear energy has a lot to contribute toward our climate-constrained grid of the future, but only if the U.S. Department of Energy and the nuclear industry commit to informing and working alongside potential nuclear host communities in true partnership. Facilitating this type of engagement would, in many ways, mark a shift in strategy and prioritization for the Office of Nuclear Energy. We are confident that, in office, Dr. Huff will continue to champion proactive, community-centered outreach practices.”
