Our Statement on the Department of Energy's RFP on Domestic HALEU Production and Nuclear Fuel Sustainability

On Jan. 9, Good Energy released the following statement from Good Energy Deputy Director Jackie Toth.

“The federal government’s long-awaited issuance today of a request for proposals to produce and provide the Department of Energy with high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) domestically is a key step toward establishing a strong domestic nuclear fuel supply chain. Nuclear plants need fissionable fuel to run, and many of the benefits of advanced reactors depend upon their use of HALEU. The United States and an increasing number of countries are looking at nuclear energy for reliable, low-carbon power.

“In Dubai last month, we were pleased to witness Assistant Secretary Kathryn Huff announce that the United States and four allied nations would invest over $4 billion toward securing a global uranium fuel supply for advanced reactors. More efficient use of uranium fuel, which HALEU enables, is just one component of a healthy nuclear ecosystem. We continue to encourage the Department of Energy and other policymakers to reimagine the nuclear lifecycle — from uranium mining to waste disposal — to ensure that the communities that host nuclear infrastructure can benefit from such investments.”
